In addition to typical food vendors this year we will be embarking on a new and exciting collaboration with the Newtown High School Culinary Department. Focusing on Food Sustainability and the elimination of food waste, this project promises to be both educational and delicious! Inspired by some amazing research and initiatives we will be offering a menu of 21st century foods, packaging and drinks. Did you know food waste is the single largest component of solid waste sent to incinerators and landfills? The Connecticut DEEP is actively supporting programs throughout the state to address this issue.
Did you know 75 percent of the food we consume comes from just 12 plant sources and five animal sources. And just three crops — wheat, corn and rice — make up nearly 60 percent of the plant-based calories in most diets? A fascinating new study promotes a whole new approach to our diets, food industry and the effects on our fragile planet.
Not yet registered as a vendor at this year’s Newtown Earth Day Festival? What are you waiting for? The Festival is only a month away! Over the years our festival has become an eagerly anticipated event with over 4,000 attendees and more than 100 local vendors.
